Transpupillary
Thermotherapy (TTT) is a special form of Laser treatment for Choroidal
Neo Vascular Membrane (CNVM) due to various causes like
Age related Macular
Degeneration (AMD), High Myopia, idiopathic and post inflammatory.
Transpupillary Thermotherapy (TTT) is a low energy, long exposure laser
treatment using a special Diode laser. This gently heats up the tissues
leading to closure of the abnormal new vessels (CNVM) with minimum or no
damage to the surrounding normal tissue. It is particularly indicated in a specific type of CNVM, i.e., the occult type. It is also a suitable alternative to the more expensive Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) laser. This procedure itself takes only a few minutes and is usually painless and without any significant side effects. Since there is no dye injected, there is no risk or special precautions for photosensitivity, and the patient can go back to normal routine after it.
TTT
is very effective in stabilizing vision; though repeat treatment
sessions may be needed for recurrent or persistent CNVM. The aim of the
treatment is to try and preserve and stabilize the vision, and not to
improve vision. A large number of patients achieve stabilization of
vision; some of the patients may even notice some improvement in vision
also. It is mandatory for the patients to maintain very regular follow
up after this treatment, and monitor their vision regularly with the
help of Amsler Grid.
